Image Rights on Your Website

Most images are protected by copyright law. Google makes finding the perfect image so easy. And because it is so easy to find, copy and paste beautiful professional images, many people assume they can use those images in their marketing materials. However, you should know most images are protected by copyright law and it's illegal to use them without purchasing the right to do so.

We don't expect you to know the ins-and-outs of web design and copyright law! But when you work with aj Web Design Plus we become your trusted advisor! We want to go the extra mile and educate you about the consequences of using images and/or graphics that you may not have the legal rights and/or permissions to use so you can avoid any potential harm.

Image rights are carefully monitored. Companies like iStock, Getty Images, and more have entire departments dedicated to hunting down instances of their copy-written material being illegally used online. It may seem unlikely you’d ever be targeted or noticed, but it actually happens more often than you would think.

If you choose to add an image (or request us to add an image) illegally, intentionally or not, you could find yourself liable for hefty fines. We have seen retailers be held responsible for fines of several hundreds and even thousands of dollars, along with additional legal action.

Images you upload or supply should be legally obtained. Any image aj Web Design Plus supplies for you has been legally obtained from a vendor's image bank meant for marketing or purchased from a image provider. We however, cannot know the origins or legal status of any image(s) provided by non-aj Web Design Plus employees, like you, your staff or third parties you engage with. That’s why we want you to be informed of this liability.

Not sure if you have the right to use an image? If you’re not certain that you have the right to use an image you have supplied us or added to your site yourself, come to us for guidance and we can help you find a good alternative you can be certain is legally obtained.

A good rule of thumb is -

If you didn't:

  • Take it yourself

  • Have it supplied to you by one of your vendors for marketing purposes

  • Pay for it

Then you probably don't have the right to use it.
